Edition 2020, 352 pages, format 148x210 (A5).
The guidebook is bilingual – in Bulgarian and in English – so we hope that our unique rocks in Vratsa will be discovered by climbers from all over the world. The region has been developing fast as a tourist destination focusing on outdoor activities – and rock climbing is probably the most important of them.
This guidebook includes all climbing routes – nearly 600 – existing on the limestone crags near Vratsa, of which 280 are fully equipped with bolts for sport climbing and the rest are trad, alpine or mixed – partially equipped with in-situ anchors. Length varies from short one-pitch sport and trad routes, through several pitches, to the longest ones, of 10 to 13 pitches. The latter go up the majestic 350-metre high Central Wall. This is the second updated and expanded edition of the 2014 guidebook.
There are routes at Vratsa suitable for rock climbers of all levels and preferences. Sport routes range from difficulty grade 5c to 8c, and the trad (alpine) ones up to 7c (9). The region is suitable for beginners’ training courses as well. There is huge potential for new routes – in already developed sectors or in new ones.
For each sector, routes are traced out on photographs; bolted belays are marked with white-filled circles, and belay points equipped with pitons or needing temporary protection (nuts, cams) with black-filled ones. Information about sport-climbing routes includes grade, length, number of quickdraws needed, year when they were equipped and by whom – but that’s all, so we won’t spoil your on-sight! For trad/alpine routes, you will also find short pitch-by-pitch descriptions and topos. The first ascent date and authors’ names are given as well. Other important dates and events can be included, as well as information about subsequent re-equipment if such has been made. The abbreviation FFA denotes the First Free Ascent of a route; and FA the First Ascent.
Along with the book you get extended access to the support site www.climbingguidebg.com, the section holding information on Vratsa’s climbing routes. You get access to up-to-date information on new or changed, along with older and newer topos not included in the guide book.
