Deep Water Solo Climbing Meeting – sixth annual event in the village Kamen Briag. Time – from 1st to 10th of August.

How to get there? Kamen Briag is a tiny village at the northern coast of the Black Sea, 80 km north of Varna, the second biggest city in Bulgaria. You can fly to Varna and rent a car there.

About the climbing: there are five sectors near Kamen Briag and eight near Tiulenovo, a village, 5 km, north of Kamen Briag. The quality of the rock is much better in Tiulenovo’s area. There is a topo guide in www.climbingguidebg.com and www.highballclimbing.com, which is outdated but you can get a general impression. It’s much better to climb with the local climbers, at least in the beginning of your stay. They could be found in the coffee/breakfast time, between 9 and 10 o’clock, in “Trite Kestena” – small bar and restaurant in Kamen Briag, with three chest-nut trees in front of the restaurant’s garden. It’s recommended to have a rope for safety reasons. If you don’t know quite well any sector, don’t take anything for granted about the depth beneath the routes! Don’t climb alone! Don’t climb when the sea is rough! It’s equal to free soloing – falling is not an option.

About the accommodation: there is a hotel next to the restaurant, 20 EU for a double room. Some of the houses are letting rooms. The prices vary between 7 and 10 EU per bed. There isn’t a camp site over there. It’s possible for wild camping on the field between the village and the shore. Many people are camping there but you should take the tent when you leave for climbing because of history of stolen stuffs. The car break-ins are common in the touristic season, although not so for the northern coast and out resort places. Don’t leave any values, visible, in the car!
About the food: there is three food shops where you can find bread, butter, feta cheese and kashkaval (traditional yellow cheese), milk, yoghurt (very traditional food), biscuits and fresh local fruits and vegetables. Within 15 km you can find better supplied shops, market and pharmacy in the towns of Kavarna (south) and Shabla (north). In Kamen Briag there are two nice restaurants with gardens. The food is good. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner there, espresso, nescafe, beer and simple cocktails also.

About the rest days: the closest sand beach is just before the town of Shabla. It’s pretty long so you can find a quiet place there. You can have a lunch in the restaurant next to the beach. In the first village, north of Kmen Briag – St. Nikola, there is small but very good organized scuba diving center, run by certificated pros. They’re fluent in English. Maybe you’ll be interested in cape Kaliakra with fortress ruins and cape Shabla, the most eastern part of the country. It’s worth to visit some restaurants nearby like Midena ferma “Dulboka” (The Muscle Farm “Deep”) and the restaurant next to Durankulak Lake. For the Muscle Farm, when you reach the small beach, choose one of the three restaurants that is on your right side, looking the sea.
